Peak Inspiratory Pressures


- normal patients when ventilated at normal tidal volumes, will have peak inspiratory pressures of 25-30 cm H20; 
- many ICU pts have abnormal lung Compliance & show peak pressures of 30-40 cm H2O; 
- barotrauma does not occur when PIP is < 50 cm H2O; 
- barotrauma is seen in 8% of patients when PIP is 50-70%; 
- barotrauma is seen in 43% of patients w/ PIP > 70 cm H2O; 
- most ventilators have a pop off valve set at 60 to 70 %
