Listeria



Ampicillin, or septra; Also consider: Tetra, Chloramphenicol,
erythromycin, Pen G
    Listeria is a gm pos, non acid fast, noncapsulated, nonsporulating, motile bacillus that is Beta hemolytic, found world wide. 
25% of Listeriosis patients have: cirrhosis, lymphomas, solid tumors, immunodefficiencies:
AIDS, Cancer Rx;
    In adults, meningitis is the most common form of listeriosis; Isolation by culture is necessary for diagnosis, and the lab must be notified if
the possibility of Listeriosis exists.
For Meningitis in Adults consider Pen G 75,000 to 100,000 Units/kg given IV q4hr for 10-14 days after defervescence
