- Magnesium Hydroxide/MOM:
- osmotic laxative for acute emptying of bowel prior to diagnostic procedures;
- for acute constipation, and hyperacidity;
- adult: antacids: 5-10ml PO prn;
- laxative: 15-60ml PO prn (Suspension: 8%) which is 80-160 mEq of Mg ion;
- peds: 0.5 ml/kg/dose PO;
- supplied:
- MOM Suspension is a 8% solution of MgOH;
- tabs: 325 mg;
- contraindicated with renal insufficiency or intestinal obstruction;
- Magnesium Sulfate:
- for seizures, replacement for hypoMg, hyperalimentation, refactory hypokalemia, and hypo-calcemia;
- adult: replacement: 1-2gm IM/IV;
- as laxative: 5-15 gm (40-120 mEq);
- peds: 25-50 mg/kg/dose IM or IV q4-6hr or 3-4 doses; may repeat if hypomagnesemia persists;
- contraindicated with renal failure;
- supplied: Injection: 100 mg/ml, 125 mg/ml, 250 mg/ml, 500 mg/ml
