- Radiographs:
    - radiographs of hip may show prominence of the trabeculae that constitute Ward triangle. (Singh index)
    - radiographic studies of other bone show decrease in numbers of trabeculae, particularly the horizontal ones;
    - bone scans usually show no increase in radionuclide uptake unless fracture has occurred
