- Hypothyroidism in Infants and Children:
- in the newborn period, hypothyroidism manifests itself as cretinism;
- infant is described as sluggish, has a short stature, coarse hair, protruding tongue and protuberant abdomen;
- retardation of growth late appearance of secondary ossification centers which may fragment and increased increased SCFE;
- in some cases, there will be absence of the distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphysis
- in the skull, wormian bones and prolonged separation of sutures may be encountered;
- similar changes may be seen in mucopolysaccharidoses:
- in children there may be fragmented, irregular epiphysis (epiphyseal dysgenesis), which may resemble Legg-Calve-Perthes disease;
- in older children, hypothyroidism may resemble the changes seen in Perthes Disease and may actually lead to to SCFE;
- Medications:
- synthroid
